What is a Cooling System Service?

To neglect your vehicle’s cooling system could result in overheating, which is one of the top cause of major engine trouble. All cars and trucks require routine maintenance of the cooling system to ensure that it is able to properly regulate the temperature of the engine. The cooling system consists of a number of parts, including the water pump, hoses, radiator, and thermostat. A mixture of antifreeze (coolant) and water within the system flows constantly, which is what helps to reduce the temperature inside the motor. Your car is likely to suffer engine damage if a cooling system service is not undertaken regularly.
So what does a cooling system service consist of?

Drain
The first step in conducting cooling system service is removing the old coolant/water mixture. By just simply draining the fluid from the radiators results in at least 60 percent of the original fluid being left in the engine, therefore special methods are used to ensure that all of the old fluid is removed. This procedure is necessary because after many miles of use it can become contaminated with particles that can damage the system and the engine.

Thermostat Check
A good indicator that the thermostat should be replaced is if the vehicle has high mileage. An aging thermostat is more likely to fail, which could result in an instance of overheating.

System Analysis
On inspection of the cooling system hoses and other parts, the technician(s) completing the cooling system service will conduct a thorough inspection to identify any potential problems. If any are present the owner of the car will be notified and a ‘no obligation’ quotation with the suggested repairs will be presented. The owner of the vehicle will be shown the damage or wearing part to ascertain why the service should be completed.

Refill
Once any replacement parts are installed, the system will be refilled with the proper antifreeze/water mixture, allowing you to get back on the road without having to worry about overheating.
