Pre-holiday Motor Vehicle Checks

It’s that time of year when families and friends pack up their cars and hit the road for their holiday. Be sure that your car is up for the task if you’re planning on covering some extra mileage over the holiday season this winter/summer. By performing a few checks and having routine car service completed you can help prevent the possibility of needing to make a pit stop at a workshop along the way. Here’s what to consider for your pre-holiday check for car.
Oil Change
Don’t procrastinate, if your car is anywhere near due for an oil change go ahead and have it done now. New oil will prevent harsh engine friction and restore engine performance and fuel economy.
Belts & Hoses
If your vehicle is due for a timing belt replacement don’t hesitate to have it done. All belts and hoses should be inspected before embarking on a long trip. Blown hoses or snapped belts could wreak havoc on the motor.
Fluid Top Off
Make sure your car has enough fluids, including the transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid and power steering fluid.
Battery Check
It’s a lot cheaper to purchase a new battery than to hire a tow truck. Your nearest car service company in Cape Town can test your battery for you.
Lights & Wipers
Since you will be spending much time on the road be sure all headlights, tail lights, flickers, reverse lights, brake lights and other exterior lights are working properly. Test your wipers, as you don’t want to get caught in a downpour with bad windshield wipers.
Tyre Check
Ensure that the tyres are properly filled to manufacturer’s specifications and have sufficient tread. For your own safety and that if your passengers. If you notice any cracked or bubbling rubber, it is advisable to have the tyres replaced prior to heading out on the journey.
Scheduled Maintenance
Book a service with your nearest car service company in Cape Town. Your car’s owner’s manual will outline the what is required for the cars next scheduled service. Have the maintenance done that is necessary before leaving. This will ensure improved performance and fuel economy. This might include installing new spark plugs are a fresh air filter or new fuel filter.
Safety Kit
While you can never envisage what could happen on a trip, ensure that a safety kit is in your car boot that includes first aid items, safety triangles, road flares and water.
